Gay friendly Democrats control Senate
The Democrats have taken control of the US Senate in the mid-terms as the final election results come through.
The party already won the House of Representatives yesterday but winning the Senate would make it the first time since 1994 that the Democrats controlled both Houses of Congress and could mean a brighter future for gay rights legislation.
By controlling Congress, the Democrats would have more say over upcoming legislation such as the Federal Marriage Act, which would constitutionally ban gay marriage, as well as legislation on hate crimes and teaching about homosexuality in school.
The Democrats are generally known to lend a sympathetic ear to gay equality with less alignment to religious conservatism, so the gay community has good reason to be excited about the next Congress period.
However, some states are considering recounts.
