Five-couples have had their requests for marriage licenses denied in Greenville, South Carolina this Wednesday.

The couples are part of Campaign for Southern Equalityā€™s ā€œWe Doā€ project. They request marriage licenses they know will be turned down in an effort to bring attention to same-sex marriage rights.

They were turned away two days after the 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals, which includes South Carolina, ruled that Virginiaā€™s ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional.

Despite the ruling South Carolina will continue to fight for the stateā€™s same-sex marriage ban.

South Carolina Equality and the ACLU of South Carolina launched a petition yesterday asking Attorney General Alan Wilson to stop defending the stateā€™s ban on same-sex marriage.
