Equal marriage plaintiff: Republicans clearly don’t consider us human

The plaintiff who brought equal marriage to all 50 states has questioned whether Republicans consider LGBT people human.

Jim Obergefell had sued Ohio for the right to be identified as his late husband’s widower in a challenge to the state’s marriage ban, and eventually became the lead plaintiff in the Supreme Court case that brought equal marriage to all 50 states.

But the equality advocate is not done yet – and said he has been taken aback by the extreme nature of GOP opposition to the court ruling.

The GOP this month adopted a new national party platform, containing some of the worst anti-LGBT measures seen in decades.

The platform rejects attempts to ban ‘gay cure’ therapy for minors. claiming “parents should be free to make medical decisions about their children without interference” – while also insisting: “Natural marriage between a man and a woman is most likely to result in offspring who do not become drug-addicted or otherwise damaged.”

It calls for the Supreme Court ruling on equal marriage to be reversed, opposes transgender rights legislation, and calls for ‘religious freedom’ laws to permit anti-LGBT legislation.

In an interview with Huffington Post, Mr Obergefell questioned whether the Republicans see LGBT people as humans.

He said: “Our status as equal Americans is at stake because the GOP clearly does not consider us human.

“They don’t consider us worthy of really anything and if we don’t fight against that and if we don’t get our family, our friends, our allies to stand with us and to fight against that, l’m scared about what the future holds for us.”

He added: “We have got to have a Democrat in the White House and we have got to make sure every election, not just presidential, but every local, state election, we’re out there voting for the progressives.

“For the candidates who actually stand for ‘We the People’ and fight for all of us.”
