Jim Parsons and husband Todd Spiewak both struck down with ‘brutal’ COVID-19
Jim Parsons has revealed that he and his husband Todd Spiewak both suffered with COVID-19.
The former Big Bang Theory star, who is currently appearing in gay Netlix play adaptation The Boys in the Band, confirmed that he contracted coronavirus earlier this year.
Jim Parsons says he ‘completely lost’ sense of taste and smell.
Speaking to Jimmy Fallon, Parsons revealed: “Todd and I both had it early on. It was, like, middle of March. We didn’t know what it was.
“We thought we had colds, and then it seemed less likely, and then finally we lost our sense of smell and taste.”
The actor continued: “It defied the descriptions for me. I didn’t realise how completely taste and smell could be gone.
“And when you’re in quarantine and there’s really nothing to do but eat, oh my God, that was brutal.”
He quipped: “I ate everything, I just didn’t taste it! It’s the definition of wasted calories.”
The pair both made full recoveries from the virus, however.
The Boys in the Band star achieved an important queer milestone in lockdown.
Parsons did achieve an important queer milestone during lockdown – he bleached his own hair.
He recalled: “I had bleached my hair off-and-on on my 20s, and it had been so long since I’d done it, for obvious reasons – work, and the show. I kept thinking, I’m going to do it now that the show’s over.
“I thought, I’m going to do it right, I’m going to have somebody do it where it looks natural. Then quarantine hit, and about six weeks in, we’d been sick and I thought, screw it, let’s buy some crap! Todd did it, it took about six hours and burned my scalp, but you know what, beauty is pain. Or, a mediocre look.”
The actor also revealed he turned to other pursuits to keep himself occupied during lockdown.
He said: “I took a painting class for a while. I took a creative writing class for a while, and everything petered out.
“I don’t know if the truth is ‘you’re just an actor and that’s what you do and that’s what you should do’, or if it’s just that I really don’t have the ‘see through, stick to it’-ness for anything.
“It’s sort of embarrassing, but you know, here I am!”
