Alleged Nigel Evans rape victim warned he would ‘get Nigelled’
A university student who alleges former deputy speaker Nigel Evans raped him was warned by colleagues he would “get Nigelled” before going to his home, Preston Crown Court has heard.
The 22-year-old man told the court that rebuffing Mr Evans would have created an “awkward” situation at a drink-fuelled dinner party at the MP’s constituency home in Ribble Valley, Lancashire.
The man had agreed to stay overnight in a spare room last year.
He said: “It’s one of those things, in hindsight but at the time I didn’t feel able to say – to be strong, to say something that would’ve made social awkwardness at the time. There’s no single way to say anything without it being awkward. I was thinking I wish I could [but] I didn’t feel able to.”
Peter Wright QC, defending, suggested to the complainant that he willingly went to the MP’s bedroom following a period of “intimacy” downstairs where they had been kissing.
The Press Association reports the man replied: “That is pure fiction.”
Yesterday the man, who is giving evidence from behind a screen, admitted it was “a bad decision” to get into bed with Mr Evans and it was “stupid” in hindsight.
The trial was adjourned until Friday.
Mr Evans denies one rape, two indecent assaults and six sexual assaults.
The trial continues.
