Jeb Bush: Marriage debate should continue after Supreme Court judgement
Presidential candidate Jeb Bush has said the same-sex debate should not end with the Supreme Court judgement.
The Court is due to announce its decision whether states can ban same-sex marriage at the end of this month.
Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush was speaking at Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Road to Majority Conference when he said: “I think it’s got to be important over the long haul, irrespective of what the courts say.”
He has previously said that he hopes the Supreme Court rules against same-sex marriage, saying: ” “I believe in traditional marriage. I hope the Supreme Court rules that way.”
At the conference, he affirmed his support for “traditional marriage,” saying: “In a country like ours, we should recognize the power of a man and a woman loving their children with all their soul as a good thing, as something positive and helpful for those children to live successful lives.
“And while there are people who disagree with this, we should not push aside those who do believe in traditional marriage.”
In May, he gave his support to “religious freedom” laws which allow businesses and organisations to discriminate against LGBT people.
Fellow Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum has similarly said he will “fight” the Supreme Court if they rule in favour of same-sex marriage.
