President Obama nominates out gay official as Army secretary
An out gay defence official has been nominated by President Obama as the Army secretary.
The White House announced the nomination of Eric Fanning on Friday.
If Fanning is confirmed by the Senate, Fanning would become the first out gay official to serve in such a role.
Praising Fanning on Friday, Obama made a statement saying his years working in his administration would be a great addition to the US Army.
“Eric brings many years of proven experience and exceptional leadership to this new role,” said Obama.
“I am grateful for his commitment to our men and women in uniform, and I am confident he will help lead America’s Soldiers with distinction. I look forward to working with Eric to keep our Army the very best in the world.”
Fanning has served previously as the head of the civilian side of the military service, as the acting Air Force secretary.
However, the Army secretary, as a Senate-confirmed role, would be a first.
Fanning is currently the under secretary of the US Army.
In order to replace Fanning in his current role, Obama has nominated Patrick Murphy, former leader of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repeal.
