Trans man who thought he was overweight shocked to discover pregnancy
Kayden Coleman thought the extra weight was due to an unhealthy lifestyle.
A transgender man who thought he was out of shape discovered he was actually expecting a baby.
Kayden Coleman began his transition over ten years ago and preparing for a mastectomy ā which required him to stop his hormone treatment.
It was during this time that Mr Coleman says he fell pregnant ā but did not realise for nearly five months.
He says he alerted his partner, Elijah, after he started to experience severe back pain and felt extremely bloated.
āIt felt like there was a pillow under my stomach but there was no pillow,ā he told The Mirror.
The pair then joked that they should do a pregnancy test ā and were floored by the results.
After a doctor confirmed that the couple were indeed expecting a baby, they used what little time they had preparing for their new arrival.
However, Mr Coleman say that even after their daughter ā who they named Azealia ā was born, it took him a while to adjust to his new role.
āEven when I first held her it hadnāt sunk in that she was mine, so I didnāt really feel much,ā he said.
āBut I knew things would never be the same again. I was so happy to finally see her face.ā
Elijah also spoke of the pairās struggle with parenthood, and how he had to support his husband during a severe bout of postnatal depression.
āIt was tough. Kayden had postnatal depression for about a year. I wasnāt around much and we donāt have family nearby, so it was really hard,ā he said.
āPeople who say itās a joy are either lying or they have a lot of help from family.ā
Kayden also had to come out to his husbandās family, who struggled to accept him as they had no idea that he was trans.
āIt must have been difficult hearing that your sonās boyfriend was pregnant, I donāt deny that,ā Elijah explained.
āBut I felt like there were some unkind comments and I didnāt appreciate that.ā
Despite their early struggles, the couple say their family life is ābetter than everā as their daughter approaches her second birthday.
āNow it feels great. I couldnāt imagine, and donāt want to imagine, life without her. She is amazing,ā Kayden said.
The couple also say that they are determined to give Azealia a ānormalā upbringing ā and say they are just like any other family.
āWe are more than capable of loving our children just as much and just as efficiently as any other parent.ā
āOur children will not be any more confused or bullied about my being trans than any other kid is about something like having a single parent.ā
