This incredible Texas couple waited 55 years for their right to marry
After 55 years together, a Texas couple have finally tied the knotā¦ and they couldnāt be happier.
Jack Evans, 85, met his sweetheart George Harris, 82, way back in 1961, when gay people were actively persecuted by the government.
The pair have stuck together through thick and thin ā and made history after the Supreme Court ruling last summer, when they became the first to tie the knot in Dallas County, Texas.
The pair, who waited over half a century for their right to marry, opened up about their journey in an ad for Sweethearts (the US equivalent of Love Hearts) this month.
George recalled: āWhen I first met Jack was January 19, 1961. He gave me his card, and we were going to get together.
āHis card said āEvans Jewellers, New Yorkāā¦ and I thought oh lord, Iāve met a diamond merchant!
āLittle did I know that he was starving to death, selling costume jewellery door-to-door! It were just awful.
āI knew when I met Jack that was who I was looking for, who I spent all of my life looking for. If thatās not love, I donāt know what is.ā
Jack added: āIf heās not there, I canāt go to sleep. If heās not around, I donāt know what to do.ā
The pair explained that they āweptā following the Supreme Court announcement, before heading off to tie the knot.
However, they are still adjusting to the new dynamic in their relationship ā after 55 years of being denied their rights.
Jack joked: āI donāt know whether to call him my husband or my wife!ā
