Donald Trump is now refusing to talk about same-sex marriage

Donald Trump has refused to clarify his stance on same-sex marriage ā€“ claiming that everyone already knows what his policy is.

Mr Trump has rallied against equality in recent weeks, telling old Fox News he would ā€œstrongly considerā€ a plot to overturn same-sex marriage, and telling evangelical leaders they can ā€œtrustā€ him to protect ā€œtraditional marriageā€.

However, he has tied himself in a knot by simultaneously telling a lesbian journalist that he would ā€œmove forward on LGBT rightsā€ ā€“ and when challenged attempted to maintain both viewpoints simultaneously.

The billionaire reality TV star-turned-Republican politician has this week tried a new strategy: he just wonā€™t talk about it at all.

When reporter David Martosko asked him to clarify at a Q&A session, Mr Trump claimed he had made his position clear ā€œ150 timesā€.

Martosko said: ā€œYouā€™ve been kind of all over the map on [same-sex marriage], especially regarding your position on whether Supreme Court justices you might appoint should work to overturn the recent decision.

ā€œCan you state unequivocally what is your position on gay marriages, and same-sex unions in general?ā€

However, Mr Trump said: ā€œWe have policy on it. And Iā€™ve said it very, very strongly. And I think you know it.

ā€œAnd itā€™s all done and, you know, in a campaign how many times do I have to say it?ā€

When asked to specify the policy which he has apparently stated very strongly, Mr Trump replied: ā€œItā€™s like, David, itā€™s like as an example, what is my position on 900 different things.

ā€œIā€™ve said it 150 times. Weā€™re not here for discussing that. But everybody knows how I feel on it.ā€

When the reporter insisted they donā€™t actually know his position is, Mr Trump responded: ā€œDavid, sit down please. You know my position.ā€

So thatā€™s as clear as mud, then.

In a bid to court right-wingers, he has also assured lobbyists he would not block a Kim Davis-style ā€˜religious freedomā€™ law to permit discrimination against gay couples.
