As the US Election Doomsday ClockĀ ticks a few minutes closer to midnight, we can’t help but think back to simpler times.
Remember when Donald Trump wasn’t an ultra-conservative Republican figureheadĀ pushing bigoted and homophobicĀ policies?
Remember when he was just a weird sleazy billionaire in New York?
We wonder what all of Trump’s new friends in anti-LGBT hate groups would think of this clip from 2000, featuring Trump and then-New York mayor Rudy Giuliani.
The surreal comedy skit seesĀ Giuliani in full drag, fending off an advance from Mr Trump, who at the time was in-between wives number two and three.
Trump tellsĀ the drag Mayor: “You know, you’re really beautiful. A woman that looksĀ like that has to have her own special scent.”
AsĀ Giuliani sprays perfume, Trump cops a feel and motorboats hisĀ boobs.
The Mayor exclaims: “Ooh, you dirty boy! Donald, I thought you were a gentleman!”
Trump laments: “You can’t say I didn’t try.”
Sadly, he’s come a long way from campy drag skits.
Despite his once moderate and accepting stanceĀ on LGBT issues, Trump has abandoned all pretence of inclusivity during his campaign.
Trump claimed heĀ would āconsiderā appointing ultra-conservative Supreme Court justices to repeal equal marriage, and confirmed he would sign a Republican-backed law to directly permit homophobic discrimination.
On September 23,Ā Trump confirmed he would sign the so-called First Amendment Defence Act, which bans the government from taking any āaction against a person, wholly or partially on the basis that such person believes or acts in accordance with a religious belief or moral conviction that marriage is or should be recognised as the union of one man and one woman, or that sexual relations are properly reserved to such a marriage.ā
The broadly written law would effectively legalise all discrimination against LGBT people in all sectors ā from employment to retail to healthcare ā as long as the person discriminating claims it was due to their religion.
The shocking move would require the repeal of Barack Obamaās landmark LGBT discrimination protections, which Trump also confirmed he would axe.
He said in a statement: āReligious liberty is enshrined in the First Amendment to the Constitution.
āIt is our first liberty and provides the most important protection in that it protects our right of conscience. Activist judges and executive orders issued by Presidents who have no regard for the Constitution have put these protections in jeopardy.
āIf I am elected president and Congress passes the First Amendment Defense Act, I will sign it to protect the deeply held religious beliefs of Catholics and the beliefs of Americans of all faiths.ā
