Proving that history is indeed doomed to repeat itself, 2020 has regressed back to the truly cursed year of 2006 as Sacha Baron Cohen has been spotted filming as Borat.

What did we do to deserve this?

TikTok user @alexandheir was driving in Long Beach, California, when they spotted Baron Cohen skimming along in a battered pick-up truck. Sporting his trademark thick moustache and boxy tan suit.

The TikTok clip showed the 48-year-old being filmed from a camera van as he sat at the steering wheel of the vehicle, which appeared to be pulled along the road by a camera crew. The footage showed him struggling to take off his suit.

Borat Sagdiyev is one of the chameleon-like Baron Cohen’s more notorious characters. A buffoonish television reporter from Kazakhstan, the eponymous movie raised hackles by fully embracing sexism, racism, homophobia and anti-Semitisim.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan saw Borat hurl anti-gay slurs on the fly and regularly make barbed comments against Jewish people.

The film sees Borat travel to the US to experience American culture and, in a twist, his greeting men with a French-style kiss on the cheek would often provoke homophobic reactions.

It won Baron Cohen a Golden Globe and was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2007 Oscars. In some scenes, when cockroaches crawl under his door, Borat is convinced the innkeepers have transformed themselves into bugs and throws money at them.

In another, he kidnaps Pamela Anderson from an autograph signing in the hopes of forcing her into marriage.

Rumours have long swirled about the possibility of a Borat sequel, and many of these were hushed by 20th Century Fox. Cohen went onto make Bruno and The Dictator.
