People think Donald Trump wore his trousers back-to-front

On Saturday (5 June), Donald Trump returned to political rallying, but the only thing anyone could concentrate on was that he appeared to have his trousers on backwards.

Trump gave an almost 90-minute speech at the state convention of the North Carolina Republican Party, but a clip quickly began circulating online of his crotch.

In the clip, his trousers appeared to have no zip, or closing mechanism of any kind, leading many to believe that he had put them on backwards.

Some Twitter users suggested that the fashion statement could be a new way to “own the libs”, while others made the disturbing point that a man who has been trusted with “nuclear codes, the ability to start wars, the security of an entire country” seemed unable to put on trousers.

Considering his completely non-sensical attacks on the LGBT+ community throughout his presidency, social media users could be forgiven for assuming he has unable to correctly put on pants.

They were, however, wrong.

As the hashtag #TrumpPants began spreading like wildfire across Twitter, fact-checking site Snopes was forced to step in.

It reported: “Snopes looked through photographs taken at the event and published by the visual media company Getty Images that clearly show the former president on stage wearing pants with a zipper in the front… A video posted by C-SPAN of the 90-minute speech also showed the former president wearing pants the right way.”

Although Donald Trump may have managed to correctly put on his trousers, what he didn’t manage to do was focus on Republican policy in his speech.

While Republicans close to the former president have reportedly been advising him to stop spouting debunked claims of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, and instead focus on his successor and GOP policy, this isn’t something Trump seemed able to do.

In his speech to North Carolina Republicans, Trump declared Joe Biden’s victory “the crime of the century” and said the race had been like a “third-world” election.

He added: “Remember, I am not the one who is trying to undermine American democracy, I am the one who is trying to save it… What happened to this country in that last election is a disgrace.”
