Balding’s big walk for cancer charity
Ramblers across the UK are gearing up for this spring’s Macmillan “Walk Wonder” fundraiser. The event is being backed by BBC presenter Clare Balding.
In May thousands of people will be donning their walking boots and taking to some of Britain’s most breathtaking scenery in a bid to raise £1 million pounds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Broadcaster and Macmillan advocate Clare Balding is buoyant about the fundraising event:
“It’s a great excuse to spend time with friends and family of all ages on a springtime stroll, whilst helping improve the lives of people living with cancer.
“Together we can make a million for Macmillan!” she said.
Macmillan will be co-ordinating their own “Walk Wonders” across the UK.
People can also organise their own strolls by registering online at www.macmillan.org.uk/walk or calling the Macmillan hotline (0845 602 1490).
Macmillan Cancer Support works to improve the lives of people affected by cancer providing practical, medical, emotional and financial support.
Clare Balding has been BBC’s face of racing since 1997.
She has also been vocal in her support of the LGBT community.
In 2006, against the backdrop of National Coming Out day, she spoke to PinkNews.co.uk on the emotional significance of revealing one’s sexuality to others.
“You can’t be proud of who you are until everybody else knows who you are.
“Coming out can be one of the most liberating and positive experience of your life…. Enjoy,” she said.
Balding is openly gay and in 2006 formed a civil partnership with her long-term partner and Radio 4 broadcaster Alice Arnold.
