Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams has said that she wishes same-sex marriage would be legal everywhere.

The 17-year old actress, who plays Arya Stark on the series, was taking part in a fan chat organised by HBO.

After a fan asked her what she would do if she had three wishes, she said: “‘From [my] perspective, if I could have three wishes I’d wish for happiness for me, my family and everyone I care about, I’d solve world hunger and make gay marriage legal everywhere.”

The issue may be poignant for Williams, as despite growing up in England, the cast and crew of Game of Thrones work across several countries.

Game of Thrones is filmed across Croatia, which approved a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in December, Morocco, where same-sex sexual activity is illegal and could lead to up to 3 years’ imprisonment, and Northern Ireland, the only part of the UK that is yet to legalise same-sex marriage.

It’s not all doom and gloom however – scenes North of the Wall are filmed in Iceland, which legalised same-sex marriage in 2010, and early seasons were also shot in Malta, which passed sweeping gay rights legislation last week.

Game of Thrones star Kristian Nairn came out as gay last month, saying that he’d been waiting for to ask him about his sexuality.

The 6 foot 10 actor, who plays Hodor on the series, later said he was happy to have helped change some people’s perceptions by coming out.
