A Republican candidate’s attack ad claims that his opponent is “promoting teenage homosexuality” by supporting a Youth Pride event.

Phil Gingrey, who is running in a Republican primary against Karen Handel for an open senate seat, released the ad yesterday.

The TV ad states: “Georgians can send a true conservative to the Senate… but will we condone Karen Handel’s vote for Youth Pride, which promotes teenage homosexuality?

“Phil Gingrey is the true conservative. He will repeal Obamacare and never betray our conservative values.”

Despite voting in favour of Youth Pride in 2006, according to Raw Story Handel is now a Tea Party-backed candidate, and has openly supported anti-gay group Chick-Fil-A.

A lawsuit in the right-leaning state filed last month is challenging its constitutional same-sex marriage ban.

It reads: “In time, the American ideal of equality and liberty demanded that our government move past cultural and majority oppressions, however long-standing, in order to secure and fulfill the individual rights of all citizens.”

Voters in the state of Georgia approved the constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in 2004.
