A Sydney man who stole from victims he met on Grindr has been jailed
A man has been sentenced to at least 17 months in jail after he stole from men he met on Grindr.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Corey Draper, 23, used Grindr to lure two men into meeting so he could steal money from them.
Last year, Draper lured the victims he met on Grindr and convinced them to give him money to buy the drug ice. His first victim handed him $200 (£101) to buy the drug. Draper pulled out a knife and took the man’s phone and wallet, which had a further $70 (£35) inside.
He threatened to kill the man if he reported the crime to the police. He then returned the wallet and police were able to locate Draper’s DNA from it.
The following day he met up with another man, who he also threatened to kill with a knife if the man didn’t give him money but the victim got away.
Draper’s DNA was found in the victim’s car. He repeatedly rang the victim’s phone.
He was arrested on February 13, 2014 and charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon and being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.
Judge Hosking, of the Sydney District Court, took into an account a further offence of stealing from another man Draper met on Grindr.
Draper was sentenced to a maximum of 33 months jail with a non-parole period of 17 months. With time served he will be eligible for parole on October 2.
In Ireland, Grindr users have been warned to be wary of the people they met up with. A Cork resident claimed her friend had been attacked by five men after arranging to meet up with one of them on Grindr.
