A violent homophobic video game has been pulled from PC gaming platform Steam ā€“ after outrage at its incitement to murder LGBT people.

The disturbing game ā€˜Kill the Faggotā€™, the objective of which is to murder as many gay and transgender people as possible, had appeared on Steam Greenlight ā€“ which allows users to vote on games to approve them for the platform without any vetting.

The description read: ā€œHate gays ? Want to unleash your frustration with the ā€˜LGBTā€™ community? Well now is your chance. Murder gays and transgenders, while avoiding killing straight people.

ā€œGet as many points before time runs out!ā€

It assigns players points based on the number of ā€œgay fag homosā€ and ā€œtransgender freaksā€ killed ā€“ but deducts them for murdering ā€œinnocentā€ straight people.

The game featured a number of crude homophobic caricatures of LGBT people, which players were encouraged to murder. After outrage online that the game was allowed to appear on the platform, it has since been removed.

Video game critic Jim Sterling had made a video previewing the game, saying: ā€œItā€™s pretty disgusting.

ā€œThat is currently on Steamā€™s Greenlight page, awaiting your votes, and demonstrating once again that perhaps having absolutely zero vetting process on Steam isnā€™t the best idea.

ā€œSay what you will about [controversial upcoming shooter] Hatredā€¦ but at least the trailer for that game wasnā€™t spewing actual hate speech targeted at actual demographics of people.

ā€œI donā€™t know how even the most hardcore adherents of ā€˜developers should be allowed to do what they wantā€™ could actually stick up for this one.ā€

The comments underneath the Greenlight page were overwhelmingly negative.

One read: ā€œWhat the actual f**k is this? Seriously? Who the hell creates something like this and thinks itā€™s funny? How psychotic are you to think this is a good idea?ā€

Despite being pulled from Greenlight, developer Skaldic Games has made the game available from its own website.

A statement from the developer claims the game was made ā€œjust to piss off those people that are way too overly sensitive.ā€

Bizarrely, the developer requested: ā€œKeep sending all the threats and hate mail though, its a fun read, and proves you have no time on your hands.ā€
