Labour’s shadow equalities minister Gloria De Piero has retained her seat in Ashfield with a strong majority.

Ms De Piero faced a challenge fromĀ former Tory consultant Mike Buchanan, the leader of the ā€˜Justice for Men and Boys (And the Women Who Love Them)ā€™ party ā€“ who says he aims to ā€œmake feminism a dirty wordā€.

Mr Buchanan won 153 votes, compared to Ms De Piero’s 19,448.

The shadow minister for women and equalities has written for PinkNews on a number of issues including the Gender Recognition Act, the need for Britain to stay in the ECHR and strongly campaigned for allowing couples in civil partnerships to convert quicker.

Stonewallā€™s former Head of Education Wes Streeting has been elected as a Labour MP for Ilford North.

Labourā€™s Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander was unseated by a 20-year-old student who was standing for the SNP.

Ms De Piero’s ConservativeĀ counterpart, equalities ministerĀ Nicky MorganĀ was alsoĀ re-elected an MP in Loughborough, despite fears she would lose her seat to Labour.
