Labour’s shadow equalities minister Gloria De Piero holds Ashfield seat

Labour’s shadow equalities minister Gloria De Piero has retained her seat in Ashfield with a strong majority.

Ms De Piero faced a challenge from former Tory consultant Mike Buchanan, the leader of the ‘Justice for Men and Boys (And the Women Who Love Them)’ party – who says he aims to “make feminism a dirty word”.

Mr Buchanan won 153 votes, compared to Ms De Piero’s 19,448.

The shadow minister for women and equalities has written for PinkNews on a number of issues including the Gender Recognition Act, the need for Britain to stay in the ECHR and strongly campaigned for allowing couples in civil partnerships to convert quicker.

Stonewall’s former Head of Education Wes Streeting has been elected as a Labour MP for Ilford North.

Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander was unseated by a 20-year-old student who was standing for the SNP.

Ms De Piero’s Conservative counterpart, equalities minister Nicky Morgan was also re-elected an MP in Loughborough, despite fears she would lose her seat to Labour.
