Equalities minister hits back after Will Young claims she ‘doesn’t give a s**t’ about gay kids
Will Young has claimed that Education Secretary Nicky Morgan ādoesnāt give a s**tā about gay students being bullied.
The singer, who is a frequently outspoken critic of the government, made the comments over the weekend during a discussion of homophobia in education ā attacking Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities Nicky Morgan.
He said: āIt honestly breaks my heart thereās going to be more and more generations of young LGBT people who are going to have a lack of nurture and have this internalised shame, which can be changed within the education system.
ā63 percent of secondary teachers donāt think that itās a problem that someone is using gay in a derogatory sense ā and yet in 2012, a study of 1000 young LGBT people found that 98 percent found it distressing.
āThereās a mismatch ā and I donāt see the Education Secretary, whom Iām not a huge fan of at allā¦ I donāt see her addressing this at all.
āThe only conclusion I can draw is, she doesnāt give a s**t about it. I will picket outside the Department of Education until she f**king gives me some answers.ā
The Education Secretary announced a Ā£2 million fund to tackle homophobic bullying in 2014 ā and sources close to the minister hit out at Mr Young for his comments.
A source close to the minister said: āWill Young should focus on reviving his pop career instead of doing down those in Government who are actually making a difference.
āItās very sad that heās using the gay community as a way of getting back in the headlines.ā
