Equalities minister hits back after Will Young claims she ‘doesn’t give a s**t’ about gay kids

Will Young has claimed that Education Secretary Nicky Morgan ā€œdoesnā€™t give a s**tā€ about gay students being bullied.

The singer, who is a frequently outspoken critic of the government, made the comments over the weekend during a discussion of homophobia in education ā€“ attacking Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities Nicky Morgan.

He said: ā€œIt honestly breaks my heart thereā€™s going to be more and more generations of young LGBT people who are going to have a lack of nurture and have this internalised shame, which can be changed within the education system.

ā€œ63 percent of secondary teachers donā€™t think that itā€™s a problem that someone is using gay in a derogatory sense ā€“ and yet in 2012, a study of 1000 young LGBT people found that 98 percent found it distressing.

ā€œThereā€™s a mismatch ā€“ and I donā€™t see the Education Secretary, whom Iā€™m not a huge fan of at allā€¦ I donā€™t see her addressing this at all.

ā€œThe only conclusion I can draw is, she doesnā€™t give a s**t about it. I will picket outside the Department of Education until she f**king gives me some answers.ā€

The Education Secretary announced a Ā£2 million fund to tackle homophobic bullying in 2014 ā€“ and sources close to the minister hit out at Mr Young for his comments.

A source close to the minister said: ā€œWill Young should focus on reviving his pop career instead of doing down those in Government who are actually making a difference.

ā€œItā€™s very sad that heā€™s using the gay community as a way of getting back in the headlines.ā€
