The Disney Channel has aired its first ever coming out scene ā and it was incredible.
In the season two premiere of Andi Mack, 13-year-old Cyrus ā one of Andiās best friends ā begins to realise he has feelings for fellow teen Jonah.
News of this storyline predictably outraged One Million Moms, leading the anti-LGBT campaign group to launch a boycott of the Disney Channel.
After Jonah breaks up with his girlfriend Amber and quickly asks out Andi, Jonah decides to open up to his and Andiās other best friend, Buffy.
The subsequent scene, in an episode watched by 1.62 million people, is emotive, realistic and beautiful.
After a clearly emotional, hesitant Cyrus says he hasnāt ordered food, Buffy tells him: āYouāre scaring me.ā
āIām scaring me too,ā comes the reply.
Cyrus then reveals: āLast night, when we were watching Andi and Jonah, you asked me am I happy for Andi, and I said: āYes, Iām happy for Andi.ā
āBut Iām also not happy.ā
āHow come?ā responds Buffy. āAre you jealous?ā
He nods, tearing up.
āCyrus, do you like Andi?ā she asks.
He shakes his head, mouthing the word: āNoā.
āYou like Jonah,ā Buffy finally realises.
He nods and looks down, fearing the worst.
āBuffy, I feel weird. Different,ā he eventually tells her.
āCyrus,ā she says, taking his hands and smiling, āyouāve always been weird, but youāre no different.ā
Cyrus tells her heās āgladā he told her, and she assures him that telling other people will go well too.
He then says: āThis is really bad timing,ā following it up with a cheesy punchline.
āI just got a girlfriend.ā
Fans loved the emotional scene.
Like, really loved it.
