Gay Grey’s Anatomy doctors return with a handy example of how to have safer oral sex during a pandemic

Grey’s Anatomy returned with a gripping season 17 premiere and a useful lesson on how to have safer oral sex during a pandemic.

A scene during Thursday night’s (12 November) episode saw Dr Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) and his ex-boyfriend Dr Nico Kim (Alex Landi) get intimate in a supply closet.

“Can we leave my mask on?” Schmitt asked when Kim offered him a little “stress relief” from the pressures of doctoring through a pandemic.

“That’s not what I want to take off,” Kim responded.

The offer of “stress relief” was obviously code for oral sex, which was shown off screen. All viewers were shown was Schmitt’s face – which was self-explanatory.

Throughout the duration of the so-called “stress relief”, Schmitt left his mask on – which some health experts say is a safer way to practise oral sex as it can prevent transmission of COVID-19.

Borelli posted on Twitter to mark the moment, which fans hailed: “The most 2020 thing to happen.”

Another compared the moment to Drag Race star Valentina’s infamous “I’d like to keep it on”.

Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes is known for pushing boundaries and advancing queer representation with her many iconic series.

How to Get Away With Murder notably had a major rimming scene between gay couple Connor and Oliver – which left a big impression on fans.

Borelli spoke to WCIU’s The Jam about the Grey’s Anatomy season 17 premiere how COVID-19 is being explored in the upcoming episodes.

He said that writers have been interviewing and meeting real-life front-line doctors to learn more about how hospitals are dealing with the virus, and revealed there are “a lot of real doctors and nurses and real hospital personnel on set with us that teach us quite a bit”.

The 29-year-old talked briefly about coming out as gay in real life shortly after his character did.

“I did it on Instagram,” he said, “I remember I was shooting that day and we wrapped and it was right as the episode was airing and so I knew Levi was coming out, and I was like I have prepared this post with my best friend.

“It was like, ‘Oh gosh do I hit send or do I not hit send. What do I do?’ I hit send on that post and I just turned my phone off.”

He said that it was the best decision he had ever made.
