High School Musical star proudly comes out as bisexual: ‘Is it really that unexpected’

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series actor Larry Saperstein has come out as bisexual in a cheeky TikTok video.

The Disney star shared the news on Tuesday (1 June) to kickstart Pride Month. In the clip, Saperstein is resting against a pillow while text appears on the screen. The words read: “Plays a character with a girlfriend on TV is bi irl”.

The 23-year-old also captioned the post “is it really that unexpected tho” with a Pride hashtag.

Saperstein plays Big Red on the popular Disney Plus show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The mockumentary musical drama is inspired by Disney’s popular High School Musical film series from which it takes its name.

Saperstein’s character is the best friend of the show’s main character Ricky Bowen, and he fills in as a stage manager for the production. It’s later revealed in the series that he’s a talented tap dancer and has a good working knowledge of electronics. He also develops romantic feelings for another teenager named Ashlyn Caswell, played by Julia Lester.

After coming out on TikTok, Saperstein took to Twitter to further celebrate Pride. He joked that he has “30 days” to figure out “how to do drag” so he can “turn out a look before the end of the month”. He also wished all his fans and the LGBT+ community a happy Pride Month.

Fans shared in the joy that Saperstein came out as bisexual with one even declaring it a “win for the queers“.

Another person wrote: “Larry Saperstein bi, I keep winning every single day”.

Someone else posted a fan video of Saperstein alongside a heartwarming post about how proud they are that the Disney star can live his truth. They wrote: “I’m so proud of you for coming out as bi, you’re completely valid and i’m so glad people have such an amazing role model to look up to.”
