Lesbian comic apologises to Chinese community
Lesbian comedian Rosie O’Donnell has apologised for mocking Chinese people on her talk show The View.
O’Donnell was criticised by Asian Americans across the country after imitating Chinese broadcasters in a discussion about actor Danny DeVito being drunk.
She said: “You know, you can imagine in China it’s like, ‘ching chong, ching chong chong, Danny DeVito, ching chong chong chong, drunk, “The View,” ching chong.’ “
The entertainer has now issued an apology, insisting she did not mean any offence.
She said: “You know it was never (my) intent to mock and I’m sorry for those people who felt hurt or were teased on the playground.
“But I’m also going give you a fair warning that there’s a good chance I’ll do something like that again, probably in the next week — not on purpose. Only ’cause it’s how my brain works.”
Rene Astudillo, executive director of the Asian American Journalists Association, told the San Francisco Chronicle: “At long last she acknowledged that it hurt a lot of people.
“And she did it on her programme.”
