Walking Dead star Norman Reedus has said that fans of the show “get mad” at him for weighing in on his character’s romantic life.

Fans have long held suspicions about the sexuality of his character in the zombie drama, Daryl Dixon – who has never had a romantic storyline despite several close friendships with women.

Both Reedus and Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman have weighed in on the rumours in the past – but Reedus suggests that the show’s passionate fans might not appreciate him weighing in one way or another.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Reedus hinted of the storyline: “I’m not opposed to it and I’m not running towards it.

“There was a hint [that he might be gay] and I was down with that too. Whatever they give me, I’m gonna run with and I’m gonna try and kick ass with.”

He added of the show’s passionate fans, who ‘ship’ him with female characters Beth and Carol: “There’s a war out there! And people get mad at me, they get legit mad at me.

“If I say something in an interview that sounds like I’m not respecting a relationship with one of the cast members, I personally get attacked for it.

“I don’t get to pick these things, or else I would’ve had sex with every single character on this show already!”

Robert Kirkman previously said that plans for Daryl to be gay were ruled out – and that the character is actually straight.

He said: “We play Daryl Dixon being somewhat asexual on the show. He is a very introverted character, and I think that’s some of his appeal.”

He said of the rumours: “It caused quite a hubbub online. And I just wanted to make it clear that the possibility is there.

“I would have been fine with it; the network would have been fine with it; but we ultimately didn’t do that.

“I can make it official: Daryl Dixon is actually straight.”
