Susan Sarandon has claimed she would likely vote for Donald Trump above Hillary Clinton – despite being an avowed supporter of LGBT rights.

The actress is a long-time campaigner for LGBT equality – previously working with the Human Rights Campaign to call for marriage equality, as well as speaking about her gay nephew and genderfluid son.

She has been a vocal supporter of Bernie Sanders in the Presidential race – but this week claimed that if Senator Sanders loses out in the Democratic primaries, she would vote for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton despite Trump’s homophobic pledges.

Trump has said he would “consider” a plot to overturn equal marriage, and has assured Republicans he wouldn’t block a ‘religious freedom’ law to permit anti-gay discrimination. Ms Clinton has a historic raft of LGBT rights promises, and endorsements from a vast number of rights groups.

But speaking to MSNBC, the actress said of fears that Sanders supporters won’t fall in line behind Clinton: “She doesn’t [believe in] what Bernie believes in… Some people feel that she’s not authentic, that she’s a liar, so what difference does it make?”

Asked whether she would back Trump over Clinton herself, she added: “I don’t know, I’m going to see what happens.

“Some people feel Donald Trump will bring the revolution immediately if he gets in then things will really, you know explode.”

She added: “Some people feel that… I think that what’s going on now – if you think it’s pragmatic to shore up the status quo right now, then you’re not in touch with the status quo.”

The comments have been met with scorn from Clinton supporters, who warn that a split in the party’s base may essentially hand the Presidential election to the Republicans.
