Rapist Harvey Weinstein has tested positive for coronavirus. He’s 68 with underlying health conditions

Convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein has been put into isolation in a New York state prison after testing positive for coronavirus.

The disgraced movie mogul is currently serving 23 years at a maximum-security prison after being found guilty on two charges of a criminal sex act and rape in the third degree.

Officials speaking to the Niagara Gazette said Weinstein is one of two inmates and three state corrections officers who tested positive for the virus. It is believed he was carrying it when entered the prison system last Wednesday from Rikers Island.

Having turned 68 last week and suffering from multiple underlying health conditions, including heart problems, diabetes and high blood pressure, Weinstein will be considered a high-risk patient.

He underwent a three-hour back operation in December as a result of what he claims was a car accident in August, and also had heart surgery before his sentencing to have a stent implanted and remove a blockage.

Despite his ill health it looks like he won’t be getting any visits while in the medical wing, as Michael Powers, president of the New York State Correctional Officers, told the newspaper that all prison visits have been suspended to combat the spread of the virus.

“There is no better breeding ground for this virus than a closed environment such as a correctional facility,” he said.

All non-essential inmate transfers have also been suspended, and all those who had contact with the infected are being closely monitored in a bid to control the spread.

Powers could not comment on Weinstein’s situation or elaborate on any inmate’s health record due to privacy rules.

Neither Weinstein’s spokesperson, attorney or prison consultant were able to confirm or comment on the news either, as they were not aware that he had tested positive when contacted about it by Variety.
