Batwoman is to make a comeback as a “lipstick lesbian,” according to reports.

The heroine, real name Kathy Kane, will appear in 52, a cartoon series published by DC Comics

A spokesman for DC Comics confirmed to the BBC that the character will be a rich socialite who has a romantic history with ex police detective Renee Montoya, in a Superman, and Batman free world.

The graphic novel, to be published by Titan books in 2007, aims to reflect modern society more accurate than previous comics.

It includes Chinese, black and Asian superheroes.

Batwoman made her first appearance in 1956, but was drawn out of the comic book cast in 1979 when she was killed by the League of Assassins and the Bronze Tiger.
