Boy George has defended Elton John for his controversial remarks about Jesus.

John received a death threat for describing Jesus as a “compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems”.

Atlanta anti-abortionist Neal Horsley was arrested after filming himself with a placard saying “Elton John must die” and accusing the star of blasphemy.

George told The Sun: “I think he was trying to say that Jesus was compassionate. I think that’s true – the whole message of Christianity is about compassion. I think that’s the point he was trying to make.”

He added: “But I don’t want to put words into his mouth – we’re good friends now so I want to stay on his good side!”

The Culture Club singer recently said he had stopped falling out with friends and other celebrities.

He said: “I think I’m finally at the point in my life where there are no feuds. I’m more friendly with people.

“When you’re less in conflict with yourself, you’re less likely to be in conflict with anything else. What you say about other people often says more about you.”
