Drama Controller: The BBC has a ‘long way to go’ in representing the gay community
The BBC’s Drama Commissioner has said he thinks there is a “long way to go” before gay people are adequately represented.
Ben Stephenson made comments at the BBC’s Reflect and Represent session.
He said: “I would say it’s probably one of the lowest [represented] areas. When a great gay script comes in, I shall definitely be commissioning it.
Going on, however, he emphasised the importance of inclusion based on talent and creativity.
“The important thing is making these conversations feel creative and not about ticking a box, because no-one believes that creates good drama.”
Stephenson has been the BBC’s Controller of Drama Commissioning since September 2008.
