The first episode of Doctor Who’s new season will feature a lesbian kiss, it has been revealed.

The episode, titled Deep Breath, is set to air later this month to kick off the sci-fi show’s eighth season.

According to reports, one scene in the episode will see Silurian lizard-woman Madame Vastra, played by Neve McIntosh, kiss her human companion Jenny, played by Catrin Stewart.

The episode will feature villains who sense life forms by their breath, with Jenny attempting to hold her breath to avoid them.

When she struggles to breathe, however, she locks lips with Madame Vastra for the first time.

The pair have recurred on the show since 2011 and have long been portrayed as lovers, but it will mark the first time the characters have kissed on-screen.

Doctor Who has featured several prominent LGBT characters, such as John Barrowman’s omnisexual Captain Jack Harkness, since its revival in 2005.

Deep Breath marks the debut of Peter Capaldi as The Doctor, taking over from Matt Smith, who regenerated during last year’s Christmas special.

Doctor Who is set to air on August 23 on BBC One, with the first episode simulcast in cinemas around the country.
