Zimbabwean President and adamant homophobe Robert Mugabe apparently attempted to get photographers to delete images and footage of him falling over when getting off a flight.

Mugabe, 90, is known for denouncing homosexuality, and calling for gay men to be put to death.

On arriving back in Zimbabwe from a trip to Ethiopia, Mugabe fell down the stairs at Harare International Airport today.

Despite clear footage showing him trip and fall almost fully to the ground, Zimbabwe’s Information Minister Jonathan Moyo spoke to state-owned newspaper the Herald to deny that he fell.

He said that Mugabe tripped over a mis-placed carpet, and “managed to break the fall”. For good measure, Moyo went on to say that “even Jesus” would have tripped over in those circumstances.

Either way the internet found the whole ordeal hilarious, and photoshopped images of Mugabe falling, using the hashtag #MugabeFalls, appeared online this afternoon.

Ahead of his re-election campaign last year he urged for the heads of gay men to be chopped off and said gay people were worse than “pigs, goats and birds”.

Mugabe last year threatened to expel any diplomats who mention homosexuality in Zimbabwe, at a speech after his daughter’s wedding reception.

He said at the time: “Let Europe keep their homosexual nonsense there and live with it. We will never have it here. The act [homosexuality] is not humane.

“Any diplomat who talks about homosexuality will be kicked out. There is no excuse and we won’t listen to them.”

He also said that he ‘pities’ the Queen, for having to deal with Britain’s gay habits.

Homosexuality is illegal in Zimbabwe and Mugabe has been a staunch promoter of homophobic persecution since he became President in 1987.
