Log Cabin Republicans welcome Bruce Jenner’s other revelation
An LGBT group congratulated Bruce Jenner on coming out as transgender – and a Republican.
In a pre-recorded interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer, Jenner finally discussed his gender identity, as he publicly revealed an intention to live as female.
Diane Sawyer asked Jenner about the moment Barack Obama became the first US president to mention transgender people in the State of the Union Address.
She asked: “Did you cheer the president?”
Jenner replied: “I will certainly give him credit for that. But not to get political, I’ve just never been a big fan. I’m kind of more on the conservative side.”
“Are you a Republican?” asked Ms Sawyer.
Looking somewhat embarrassed, Jenner replied: “Yeah. Is that a bad thing? I believe in the Constitution.”
Log Cabin Republicans, who represent conservative LGBT people, said they welcomed this “coming out.”
Executive Director Gregory T. Angelo said in a statement: “As the nation’s only organization representing LGBT conservatives and straight allies, Log Cabin Republicans congratulates Bruce Jenner in the tremendous courage he demonstrated tonight, being true to himself both in terms of his personal identity as well as his political identity.
There is a home for you in Log Cabin Republicans — as there is for all lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender conservatives and straight allies.”
Earlier this month, the group was rejected from a Republican convention.
