OKCupid now lets people share their preferred pronouns

Dating website OKCupid has added support for displaying people’s preferred pronouns.

The popular dating site, which has millions of users around the world, rolled out an update to bolster support for trans and non-binary users.

The website already allowed people to specify their gender identity, but under the changes they will also be able to specify their pronouns.

The pronoun choice displays for other users, handily letting people know how to address someone when sending them a message.

The option allows user to pick the pronouns he/him, she/her, they/them, or to type their own.

On its blog, OKCupid explained: “OkCupid is proud to be the first and only leading dating app to create a dedicated space on profiles for LGBTQ daters to share their pronouns.

“Pronouns now appear right along with the other critical attributes that make you who you are, including your gender and sexual orientation.

“At OkCupid our goal is to empower daters to match on what matters to them and a dedicated space for your pronouns is an important way to share your authentic self and form meaningful relationships with deep human connections.”


GLAAD Vice President of Programs Zeke Stokes said: “Everyone should be able to express who they are, in their own words, and to have the opportunity to find romance with someone who respects and appreciates them.

“By creating a dedicated space for personal pronouns on profiles, OkCupid has taken an important step forward that raises the bar for LGBTQ-inclusion on dating apps.”

The company rolled out an update in 2014 allowing users to choose from a broad range of gender identities and sexual orientations.

Match.com apologised the same year, after it suggested that bisexual customers should pay for two separate subscriptions in order to be able search for both men and women.

The site later changed its policy to clarify that bisexual people will not have to pay twice, but would still need to register two accounts for ‘technical reasons’ and contact customer support to get a second subscription approved.

Its FAQ still says: “If you would like to be able to search for both men and women, please contact our Customer Care team. They will help you set up your account and search for singles.”
