Florida AG who fought against equality: ‘Best wishes’ to newlywed gays
Florida’s Attorney General Pam Bondi – who led a crusade to block same-sex marriage – has given her “best wishes” to gay couples who have now married.
Ms Bondi – who according to some reports is married to her third husband – claimed in a legal brief that “disrupting Florida’s existing marriage laws would impose significant public harm”, and would cause “significant financial and logistical problems”.
She continued to fight against same-sex marriage until the very week that marriages were due to take effect, filing desperate attempts to stall weddings.
However, after the first same-sex couples wed and Bondi was named Loser of the Year, the politician appears to have eaten some humble pie.
She said yesterday, while being sworn in for her second term: “Best wishes to all the couples who were married yesterday in Miami.
“Gay marriage is what 62% of the voters put in our constitution. You heard my oath this morning. It was to uphold the constitution, regardless.
“So now, gay marriage is legal… and I wish them the best.”
She added: “”We just want uniformity throughout the state of Florida and the country. It’s not fair if someone can get married in Miami but not another county.
“I don’t look at anything politically. I look at it as doing my job and upholding my office.”
