Would you watch this play about a gay, ISIS love affair?
A playwright has launched an online campaign in order to raise funds for a new play about a gay, ISIS love affair.
Ian Begley is the creative mind behind this provocative new play, āISIS: A gay love story.ā
The play sees a young Western man kidnapped and tortured by the terrorist group ā also known as Daesh ā before falling in love with one of his captors.
Begley is hoping to submit his debut piece to the Tiger Dublin Fringe Fest later this year.
To do so, heāll need $1,674 in financial support ā which is why he has launched a controversial new Kickstarter campaign.
Detailing the playās plot, Begley tells of how his gay, drug dealing protagonist is taken captive by ISIS ā known for throwing gay men to their deaths ā who precede to beat and torture him.
āHowever, one of his captures, who is an ISIS commander and also secretly gay, finds this fearless young man from Ireland remarkably enticing,ā the writer explains.
āThey then covertly start a relationship and fall madly in love with one another.
āThe Jihadi officer promises to secure the young manās freedom and plans an escape where they can both leave Syria forever.ā
Obviously, a subject matter such as this carries with it a heap of controversy ā and even the risk of danger.
However, Begley claims he is āa firm believer of free speechā and feels it is āvery important to show that weāre not afraid to creatively express ourselves.ā
Even, as he says himself, at the extent of āroyally pissing off a group of people who deplore our ideals.ā
If you fancy seeing the play reach the stage, you can help Begleyās dream become a reality here.
