Canada just got its first out trans judge!
Congratulations Canada! The country has just got its first ever out trans judge.
Kael McKenzie was actually appointed in mid-December, but took his seat in the Manitoba court on Friday.
He is formerly a Crown attorney, and is believed to be the first out transgender judge in Canada’s history, reports CBC.
“Kael is the first self-identified transgender judge in Canada and that is something to be celebrated,” another judge said at his swearing-in ceremony.
The judge went on to say that he “is a proud member of the Manitoba Métis Nation. His appointment can only serve to strengthen public confidence in the administration of justice in this province.”
Speaking about his prior involvement in the legal community, McKenzie said: “I’m just so grateful for the faith that’s been bestowed upon me.”
The newly-appointed judge McKenzie said he received a huge amount of support since he was appointed in December.
The support came from strangers, as well as from his friends and family.
He even went on to say that he was told by some that his appointment had helped others come to terms with their gender identity.
The parents of trans kids said the announcement was particuularly important.
“They acknowledged their fears for their childrens’ futures, and somehow my appointment helped allay some of those fears,” he said.
“They came out with a message of renewed hope that their children would have bright and prosperous futures, regardless of their gender identity.”
Thanking his wife and two kids, McKenzie said: “I have two great sons. This day would not be complete without them.”
“They’ve been the centre of my universe and I love them very much. I’m glad they agreed to miss school today.”
