Ryan Murphy gives terrifying first look at American Horror Story 10 and fans are pretty sure they’ve got the theme nailed

American Horror Story season 10 will have something to do with mermaids, body modifications or… dentists?

Ryan Murphy has shared a first-look poster teasing the yet-to-be-announced American Horror Story season 10 theme.

A crimson red mouth hangs open in (presumably) horror, with sharp, pointed teeth and what appears to be a dentist’s hand wielding a tool.

“Mermaids,” guessed one fan. “Vampires,” another, with a third suggesting: “Something to do with body mods?”

“Please, please Jessica Lange,” wrote one fan, summing up all our feelings.

American Horror Story season 10 theme is aquatic.

AHS 10 being based on mermaids, or, more likely, sirens, seems like the surest bet considering Murphy’s previous clues.

Back in May, he shared a photo of a beach (seemingly Cape Cod) with a knocked-down stick fence. Two months earlier, he posted a photo of hands crawling up a grassy knoll, with the caption: “Things are beginning to wash up on shore…”

Perhaps the biggest clue came when Murphy announced the American Horror Story season 10 cast with a video of crashing waves, soundtracked to Orville Peck’s “Dead of Night”.

He confirmed that Macaulay Culkin will join the show for the first time, with his character set to share a “crazy, erotic” sex scene with regular company member Kathy Bates.

Perhaps the biggest news is that season 10 will bring the return of stalwarts and fan favourites Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters, both of whom were absent for the first time last year.

Also returning this season are Leslie Grossman, Billie Lourd, Adina Porter, Lily Rabe, Finn Wittrock and Pose legend Angelica Ross.

American Horror Story season 10 release date delayed.

For the last few years, American Horror Story has premiered in September. However the pandemic has delayed production, with Wittrock telling Collider in October that it was set to start “relatively soon”.

Murphy had previously said that the pandemic might force him to rethink season 10 completely, describing his original idea as a “weather-dependent show”.

“I don’t know if I’ll accelerate another season or wait till next year to shoot this one,” he said in May.

FX has renewed American Horror Story through the season 13, with an episodic anthology spin-off, the cleverly titled American Horror Stories, also ordered.
