Mean Girls fan thinks we all missed the ‘most iconic joke’ in the entire film
The iconic movie Mean Girls is a must-watch for a plethora of reasons, including its amazing cast and hilarious jokes – but one fan thinks the “most iconic” joke of the film went over all of our heads.
TikTokker Sabrina Aleave shared a video explaining a subtle running joke about one of the most beloved characters in the movie, Janis Ian.
Janis Ian, portrayed by Lizzy Caplan, is one of the main characters of Mean Girls. She’s the first person that befriends Cady Heron (Lindsey Lohan), and she used to be friends with the mean girl herself Regina George. But the two had a falling out after George spread a rumour that Ian was a lesbian.
Aleave shared a fan theory, which puts the whole Janis-Regina feud in a whole new light. She believes the “most iconic joke” of the entire movie comes from George’s complete misunderstanding of the word Lebanese.
In the video, Aleave explained: “It’s come to my attention that most people don’t know the most iconic joke in Mean Girls.
“If you remember at the end of the movie, Kevin G starts dancing with Janis and asks her: ‘Are you Puerto Rican?’
“She says: ‘No, I’m Lebanese.’
“If you remember earlier in the movie when Regina was talking to Cady, she was talking about how she doesn’t want to hang out with [Janis] because she thinks she is a lesbian.
“The whole premise of the movie was based on the fact that Regina didn’t understand the difference between ‘Lebanese’ and ‘lesbian’.”
And with that, she blew the minds of Mean Girls fans
Aleave’s video set TikTok on fire, garnering over 996,100 likes and 10,200 comments in the two days since it’s been posted.
One social media user commented: “The amount of times I’ve watched this movie, and I never realised!”
Another person wrote: “I don’t know what’s real anymore.”
One person on TikTok, who described herself as Lebanese, said she understood the Mean Girls confusion. She wrote: “No joke, I’m Lebanese, and when I used to tell people that, they thought I was lesbian.
“Plot twist: I’m a Lebanese lesbian.”
