Lady Gaga: ‘I never said I was a gay icon’
Bisexual singer Lady Gaga has insisted she is not a “gay icon” despite being an advocate and supporter of LGBT equality, instead calling herself a “gay supporter.”
Gaga, who last month made a surprise appearance at the G-A-Y club night in London, told Attitude magazine should could not consider herself a gay icon as she does not consider herself to be gay.
She said: “But here, where do I say I’m a gay icon? I never said I was a gay icon. When did that happen? Are those lyrics on the album? Absolutely not.
“I don’t even consider myself…I don’t even know what that word means. That was a label that was invented years ago. I’m a gay supporter.”
In August, the singer condemned Russia for its climate of homophobic oppression. She said: “The Russian Government is criminal. Oppression will be met with revolution. Russian LGBTs you are not alone. We will fight for your freedom.”
Recently, Gaga spoke out against critics who accuse her bisexual identity of being marketing ploy, saying: “You know what? It’s not a lie that I am bisexual and I like women, and anyone that wants to twist this into ‘she says she’s bisexual for marketing,’ this is a f***ing lie. This is who I am and who I have always been.”
“For me, it’s similar to how I feel about guys. It’s more of an energy thing. I used to go to lesbian clubs all the time. I like them because I find lesbians to be way more daring than straight men, when it comes to coming on to you.
“And I really like that. And it wasn’t until I found a guy that could come onto me as strong as a lesbian that I fell in love.”
