US: Delta Airlines latest to lobby against Arizona bill to legalise anti-gay discrimination
Delta Airlines has joined other big businesses including Apple and Marriott International in lobbying Arizona’s Governor to veto a bill to legalise anti-gay discrimination.
Senate Bill 1062 would prevent the state from taking action against individuals and businesses who refuse services to people or groups based on their religious beliefs if such enforcement would “substantially burden” the free exercise of their religion.
The bill was given final approval by the legislature on Friday, but State Governor Jan Brewer has not said whether she will sign it into law.
Delta became the most recent business to call on Brewer to veto the bill.
In doing so, it joined Apple, American Airlines and hotel giant Marriott in declaring its position.
The law runs counter to the internal policies of these companies, which all forbid discrimination.
Brewer is expected to veto the bill.
