Will Young ‘proud’ of fellow gay singer Sam Smith
The singer has expressed pride over his out counterpartās continued success.
The former āPop Idolā winner says he thinks it ābrilliantā that Sam Smith has been chosen to write and record the upcoming James Bond movieās theme tune ā because he loves to see fellow gay singers succeed.
Smith confirmed he would be providing the lyrics and vocals for āSpectreā earlier this month.
Young ā who was speaking ahead of the release of his new single, āThank You ā said he loves to see other gay singers achieve success in their career and was thrilled when Smith shared the news.
āIsnāt that amazing? Thatās amazing. I love great singers,ā he told contactmusic.com.
āIf someoneās doing really well, like Sam, and theyāre really good I love it, I love their success and I love the fact that theyāre doing great.ā
āItās so nice to see someone who is a brilliant singer, and heās doing great, and heās gay, so itās like double brilliant!ā
The āEvergreenā singer later admitted he occasionally get jealous of other artistsā success ā but only if he feels they do not deserve it.
āThe only time I get frustrated is when people are perceived to be doing really well and I just think theyāre c**p, and I canāt mention who they are but I wish I could,ā he teased.
However, he says this is not the case in Smithās case and also took the chance to heap praise another out singer ā Years and Years frontman Olly Alexander ā who has previously hit out at other openly gay singers, who sing about gender-neutral love interests instead of men.
āI love Olly [Alexander] from Years & Years,ā Young said.
āI think theyāve come in from an interesting place, it is pop, itās melancholy electric pop, kind of like what I did on my last record.
āAgain I should be really jealous but I canāt be because itās really good!ā
āThere are loads of good people and the ones that arenāt really good, you know hey, I have to keep my mouth shut,ā he added.
In June, Young said it was homophobic for politicians to vote against same-sex marriage.
āFor me it certainly shows a lack of liberal thinking. Itās relying on institutions and thinking that I think is out of date,ā he said.
āSo in that sense it is a little bit homophobic.ā
