Netflix is bringing drag queen superheroes to life in ‘Super Drags’

We’re still not over the great Drag Race cull of 2018… but Netflix is offering something new to drag fans.

The streaming giant is the international home of RuPaul’s Drag Race, but was forced to pull the majority of the show’s back-catalogue from its service earlier this year in a rights dispute.

However, fear not, drag fans – Netflix have just the new show for you.

The streaming giant teased new animated series ‘Super Drags’, which features a cast of drag queen superheroes.

A 30-second teaser trailer for the show does not give much away – but we are hyped.

Netflix says: “During the day, they work in a department store and deal with their uptight bitchy boss.

“By night, they tighten up their corsets and transform into the baddest SUPER DRAGS in town, ready to combat shade and rescue the world’s glitter from the evil villains.

“Get ready, because the SUPER DRAGS are going deeper than you think.”

The show is produced by the company’s Brazilian content arm.

Marcelo Pereira, executive producer of Super Drags, said in a statement to Estado: “We are very happy to begin this partnership with Netflix.

“When Nostradamus said that the world would be saved by drag queen super heroes, no one believed – except us.

“Working with animation in Brazil is very difficult. It was almost three years of eating only instant noodles and hope.

“Thanks to Netflix we can take Brazilian animation and LGBTQ representation to the 190 countries that have access to the service. And we can also have lunch in a restaurant… and dream of a world where gays can bust the bad guys, not the other way around.

“Thank you, Netflix, for making us believe. We look forward to the next season for an all-you-can-eat restaurant.”

Chris Sanagustin, director of original international content for Netflix, said: “We are thrilled that our first Brazilian animation will present our audiences with the daring, scandalous and fabulous world of Super Drags!

“Netflix is fortunate to invest in great animation talent from Brazil, bringing the vibrant trait of Combo and the acidic mood of our producers to the beautiful and the canvases from every corner.”

Bizarrely, it is not the only much-hyped animated TV series set for release this year focusing on drag queens.

Drag Tots, which stars RuPaul and a handful of fan favourite queens from Drag Race herstory, is set for release this month.

Bianca Del Rio, Adore Delano, Latrice Royale, Valentina, Bob the Drag Queen and Detox are all on the cast of the upcoming adult drag cartoon, which is coming to WOW Presents Plus in the US on June 28.

Drag Tots will feature the queens as infant drag stars Dina Saur, Roxy Moron, Lady Liber T, Arugula, and Donatella Mewhattodoo who use their “glitter powers” to challenge a toxic mainstream culture.

Meanwhile RuPaul, who is a producer on Drag Tots, will voice talking head Corny the Unicorn.
