Alan Carr cracks joke about divorce after splitting from husband
Alan Carr joked about his divorce after breaking up with husband, Paul Drayton.
The couple had been together for 13 years before announcing their decision to part ways in January.
Speaking on his Life’s a Beach podcast, Carr told guest Joe Wicks that he hired a personal trainer after the split, joking: “I have just gone through a divorce so I told the trainer I want a revenge body. But I think he thought I said I wanted a blancmange body.”
Wicks was quick to tell Carr to value the “mental health benefits” of exercise rather than “fat loss”, adding: “If you wake up with energy, you’ve got the time to exercise, you’ll want to do it for your mind to feel less stress, especially when you are going through something emotional.”
Carr and Drayton got married in January 2018. Shortly afterwards, they shared details of the day with The One Show, including that close friend Adele had organised and paid for the ceremony.
“She’s known me and Paul for ages,” Carr explained, “and she said: ‘I want to do your special day. Let me do everything.’
“So she did everything, and she got ordained, and she married us. She is the kindest, most sweetest, loveliest person ever.”
Their divorce came after a period of difficulty for Drayton, who relapsed into alcoholism in lockdown.
Days after the split was announced, Drayton was sentenced to 14 weeks in prison for drink-driving.
He pleaded guilty after reversing into a police car while under the influence, but was released two days later after an appeal.
Lawyers argued that his mental health would have suffered behind bars.
You have led an exemplary life and we take that in your favour,” said judge Shani Barnes. “It is the first time in your 50 years you have come before the courts.
“Good luck sir do not come back. Take the opportunity and put this behind you.”
