David Cameron sends Pride message
Conservative party leader, David Cameron, has sent his goodwill message to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) community ahead of London’s pride event.
“I am delighted to send my best wishes to everyone attending this year’s Pride London event,” he said.
“The success and popularity of the many Pride events in Britain is testimony to our diversity. It’s great that so many people now join in these celebrations in our capital city, which both entertain and raise awareness.
“To all of those attending Pride London, have a great day”.
Mayor of London, Boris Johnson#, is attending his first pride event and will lead marchers to Trafalgar Square.
Prime minister Gordon Brown has just met with Stonewall Chief Executive Ben Summerskill to discuss homophobia within schools in Downing Street.
Minister for Women and Equality Harriet Harman, will tell the marchers: “This Government has championed a society in which people can expect to be treated fairly and with respect. Gay rights are an important part of this equality agenda.
“We’ve abolished Section 28, outlawed discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation, and introduced civil partnerships – with nearly 30,000 since December 2005, ending many of the injustices faced by same-sex couples and allowing them to celebrate their commitment to each other.
“But we’re doing more. Last week I announced that the Government will put a duty on schools and other bodies to tackle gay bullying and consider the needs of lesbian, gay and bisexual people, and we are going to bring in laws to ban inciting homophobic hatred.”
