Victory Fund upset at lack of gays in Obama’s Cabinet
A group that funds lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans candidates for political office in the United States has expressed disappointment at the makeup of President-elect Barack Obama’s proposed Cabinet.
Chuck Wolfe, president of The Lesbian and Gay Victory Fund, told the Washington Blade:
“As we talk about either keeping or renewing America’s promise, which the President-elect has been talking about, apparently it does not yet extend to gay and lesbian people in the Cabinet of the President.”
On Friday President-elect Obama announced that he intends to nominate United States Congresswoman Hilda Solis as Secretary of Labour, former United States Congressman Ray LaHood as Secretary of Transportation, former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk as United States Trade Representative, and Karen G. Mills as Administrator of the Small Business Administration.
LGBT advocacy groups had urged that he nominate Mary Beth Maxwell, who is gay, to the post of Labour Secretary.
The President-elect has now filled all Cabinet-level positions, though his choices are subject to Congressional hearings.
Last week the Lesbian and Gay Victory Fund praised him for naming a lesbian, Nancy Sutley, as Chair of his Council on Environmental Quality in the White House.
Barack Obama will become the 44th President of the United States when he takes the oath of office on January 20th.
