Chris Evans ’embarrassed and heartbroken’ by marriage inequality
Actor Chris Evans has said he finds the inequality in marriage rights between gay and straight couples ’embarrassing’, and predicted that in ten years society will look back ‘ashamed’.
He was being interviewed by Playboy magazine ahead of the launch of The Avengers.
When asked if he supported marriage equality, Evans, whose brother is gay, told the magazine: “Are you kidding me?
“It’s insane that civil rights are being denied people in this day and age. It’s embarrassing, and it’s heartbreaking.
“It goes without saying that I’m completely in support of gay marriage. In 10 years we’ll be ashamed that this was an issue.”
Describing Scarlett Johansson has being “like a sister to me”, he says of his taste in women: “I like girls who are self-deprecating. I like girls who make fun of themselves.
“If you can’t poke fun at yourself, what are you? […] I just want someone with a good soul. That’s about it. The rest I’m really flexible on. I like a good ass, though. I will say that.”
Evans also spoke of his mother’s propensity to “pick fights with random people from all over the world who don’t have the nicest things to say about me” on the internet.
On his experience of therapy after agreeing to play Captain America, he says: “What did I learn about myself? Well, that I’m not the only one who feels overwhelmed. Everyone deals with these feelings, at some level or another, in some way.”
Evans grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, the first US state to grant gay couples marriage licences.
