Furious Killing Eve fans call for Phoebe Waller-Bridge to rewrite disappointing finale
Distraught Killing Eve fans are begging Phoebe Waller-Bridge to rewrite the show’s ending in order to undo Sunday night’s (10 April) dramatic series finale.
Warning – spoilers ahead!
The popular spy drama came to an end in a way fans did not see coming after emotional scenes saw characters Eve (Sandra Oh) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer) finally give in to their feelings for each other and going on to take down The Twelve.
As the newly smitten couple celebrated their victory on a boat’s deck, a sniper shot Villanelle several times and she fell into the water. Eve was unable to save her and Villanelle’s visibly lifeless body was pulled away by the current.

can we start a petition for a fifth season of killing eve where we discover villanelle survived? i think it’s genuinely what the viewers deserve after that lazy ending and so many unanswered questions.— ellie (@jodiesrenee) April 10, 2022

Please Sandra, Jodie and Phoebe come back for another season or a film to make justice for your characters! What a waste of beautiful chemistry! We deserve and your characters too an epic ending!@IamSandraOh #jodiecomer #killingeve— eloela (@chaum4) April 11, 2022
It was then revealed that Carolyn (Fiona Shaw) had ordered the hit, and the final scene saw Eve unleashing a heartbreaking scream of despair. Then big red letters appeared on the screen to announce: “The End.”
Fans immediately took to social media to reveal their fury and devastation about the ending of the show, arguing that the plot of the final series had been a far cry from the energy of the series when it first premiered.
The BBC series originally had Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the lead writer in season one before she stepped back to work on other projects.
Now fans are pleading for Waller-Bridge to return and create a special episode in which Villanelle and Eve somehow enjoy a happy ending similar to the one featured in Luke Jennings’ Villanelle novel series – in which Eve and Oxana get to enjoy life together.
One fan tweeted: “Can we start a petition for a fifth season of Killing Eve where we discover Villanelle survived? I think it’s genuinely what the viewers deserve after that lazy ending and so many unanswered questions.
“Like, a season that explains everything to do with The Twelve and Kenny and everything unanswered, and ends with Villaneve living a happy life through the years.”
Another viewer added: “How much do we have to pay Phoebe Waller-Bridge to re-write the final season of Killing Eve and give a proper ending to Villaneve as they and we deserve?”
“I’m at that point when I demand a change.org where we, true adoring fans of Killing Eve, collect signatures to release a Phoebe Waller-Bridge rewrite four season. Sandra’s Eve and Jodie’s Villanelle deserved better,” another fan added.
One disgruntled fan agreed: “Can we get Phoebe Waller-Bridge to remake the last episode like they did for Justice League?”

“Every moment in this show exists so that these two women can end up alone in a room together. Really it would have been a betrayal to the audience if they didn’t come together in the end.” — ‘Killing Eve’ creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge— 𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 (@DeLucaBishopgif) April 11, 2022
Another pleaded: “Please Sandra, Jodie and Phoebe come back for another season or a film to make justice for your characters! What a waste of beautiful chemistry! We deserve and your characters too an epic ending!”
“Now I wish the actors would come together again and film an alternative final season with Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the head writer – something akin to what happened with the Dexter franchise,” another fan mused. “Since both the fans AND the critics hated the final season and finale, we can only hope.”
In an interview with TV Line, Killing Eve’s lead writer Laura Neal defended the ending and stated that the show’s writers simply “couldn’t imagine a world where Eve and Villanelle could exist in domestic bliss for very long”.
She also argued that Killing Eve ended on a “triumphant” note for Villanelle despite her death, adding: “It is a happy ending for Villanelle in some respects, because she gets what she wants, which is that she demonstrates that she’s changed, and she does this thing for Eve that allows Eve to go on and live her life.”
Meanwhile, Jodie Comer suggested that Villanelle’s death was “inevitable” as she told Elle magazine: “She’s like a cat with nine lives. What I loved about the moment was that was a really selfless act that she did that caused it. It felt right that in that moment she protected Eve.
“There was something about that shielding, I think, that signified how much she had changed. She was trying so desperately to change at the beginning and I don’t think she ever realised how much she had, which is so sad. That moment really shows how Eve changed her life.”
