Ruh-roh! Scooby-Doo’s Velma being a lesbian is seriously upsetting the far-right

Warner Bros confirming that Velma is queer has had the usual far-right pundits yelling, “zoinks!”

Various far-right political pundits and organisations metaphorically tore their hair out after a recent clip from the newly-released Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! confirmed that Velma Dinkley is canonically a lesbian.

The clip, which completely broke the queer corner of the internet, showed Velma gushing over the newly introduced character Coco Diablo in the overly-analytical way that only she could.

With steamed glasses and mouth agape, the mystery’s Inc. brainiac listed off the character’s “amazing turtleneck!” and “incredible glasses!” in a segment so adorably romantic it could have dropped off the back of a Nora Roberts novel.

But some, including far-right pundit Steven Crowder, weren’t impressed with the idea of two fictional characters being gay.

In a clip from an episode of Louder with Crowder, Crowder remarked: “If we’re going to b***h about appropriation, why do you need to take a straight character and make her lesbian.

“Just go make your own. It’s not our fault people don’t want to watch it, just because we don’t want to watch a bunch of cartoon women shop at Bass Pro,” he continued in a bafflingly confusing dig at lesbians over fishing, apparently.

Additionally, Fox News dipped its toes into the outrage ocean with a segment dubbed: “SCOOBY DOO GOES WOKE WHEN VELMA COMES OUT AS GAY,” where several different pundits came on to give the exact same opinion – that a lesbian fictional character is bad.

Velma is historically a gay icon

But historically, Velma has been an underground LGBTQ+ icon for years. Even during the pre-scripting stage of the 2002 live-action Scooby-Doo film, director James Gunn said he wanted Velma to be “explicitly gay.”

“In 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down and watering it down, becoming ambiguous, then nothing, and finally, having a boyfriend.”

Additionally, a producer behind the 2010 cartoon series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated wrote that Velma is definitely, 100 per cent gay.

“We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character while she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why.

“There are hints about the why in that episode with the mermaid, and if you follow the entire Marcie arc it seems as clear as we could make it 10 years ago.”

Regardless of how hard the far-right pundits scream, the community won’t stop celebrating our new out and proud lesbian queen.

In fact, the major-multimedia company Google was so excited at the news that it implemented a fun easter egg to celebrate her coming out.

If users type “Velma” or “Velma Dinkley” into the Google search bar, they’ll find a cavalcade-style confetti shower fly down the screen, along with the Pride and lesbian flags.
